OUR CAMPAIGNS / TAKE ICE OUT OF POLICE
Las Vegas 287(g) Program
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has a signed agreement with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the 287(g) program, deputizing local police officers to engage in the work of immigration enforcement. Per documentation from LVMPD, ten officers are currently paid by the county to do national enforcement work. They screen everyone foreign-born upon arrest, regardless of whether or not they are charged or convicted of a crime. Nationally 287(g) is infamous as an attempt to legalize racial profiling, as in Arizona under Sheriff Arpaio. The program has come under increased scrutiny for lack of transparency and supervision.
The following information was obtained in response to a public record request sent to Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department by Arriba Las Vegas and the National Day Laborer Organizing Network.
LVMPD Standard Operating Procedures:
Internal policies determine how Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department implements the 287(g) program. Standard Operating Procedures from 2015, 2017, and 2019 indicate the police departments internal priorities for who they turn over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and how they process individuals for deportation proceedings.
Public statements made to local media and on social media indicated a change in policy. However, the current Standard Operating Procedures indicate no such change.

Memorandum of Agreement Between LVMPD and ICE
The partnership between Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and Immigration and Customs Enforcement was established in 2009 and has been regularly renewed. The agreement deputizes local law enforcement agents to perform the work of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, specifically by screening individuals, generating detainers, detaining individuals beyond their release date, and generating Notices to Appear in immigration court.
